Life Doesn’t Happen TO You

June 25, 2026·3 min read

… life just happens. To be honest, as plain and simple as that is, so matter-of-fact, I’ll be damned if it doesn’t feel like it happens TO MEEE sometimes! I know everyone can agree with that sentiment.

Ever had to move away from your girlfriend/boyfriend? “Why me??!!”

Ever been forced to change jobs because management said so… and the next job is terrible in comparison? “Why me??!!”

Ever replaced the windshield on your car just to get a rock thrown at your new windshield and crack it in almost the same spot less than two weeks later because the roads in California are SO torn up and you didn’t learn your lesson about following too close to trucks the first time and now you have to pay for a new one out of pocket from the money that you earned from your now soul-sucking job thanks to your goofy manager?! …No? …Just me?

Well, dang. Some events do feel veerrryyy specific and targeted, don’t they? Gotta love the timing of life sometimes. We can all rest assured, though, that the universe truly doesn’t care THAT much about us to take time out of its day, away from guiding the winds, the waves, and the rains, to direct energy at us to make us feel bad about our days; thankfully! So while Barney the purple dinosaur, and his gang of fluffy characters and 4th graders dressed in 90s era attire, most definitely will disagree with me here, we are not special. Folks, this is a great thing!

Are we special to our friends, to our family, to our coworkers? Most definitely. Are we special to our kids? Beyond comprehension (especially if you’re reading this and your diver’s license says 1976 or prior 😘). But, are we special, as an individual being, from a cosmic perspective? My opinion is no; we are not.

Again, this is great news for us, because this means that life doesn’t have our beautiful face in its sniper scope with the reticle aimed right between our eyes. It means that life events will happen, regardless of whether or not we like them. They will happen when we’re sad. They will happen when we’re mad. They will happen if we’re poor. They will happen if we’re rich. They will happen if we stay behind closed doors and they will happen if we speed our coupe into a ditch. So say it with me everyone: “We cannot control things that happen in our life!”

“Ew…yuck. Saying it out loud feels gross. I work so hard and try to be as good of a human as I can be. I don’t deserve bad times in my life. Am I perfect? Nope! But did I deserve THIS?!”

Sigh… it doesn’t matter. That’s the wrong question to ask. It’s from the wrong perspective. And that’s ok. Society hasn’t conditioned us to ask questions from an appropriate perspective at all times; though that would be ideal. It doesn’t matter because it doesn’t apply to you. The question of what we “deserve” can be answered by an infinite number of subjective responses from people around the world. To cut it short: it’s pointless to ask. It doesn’t matter. Take solace in that; it doesn’t matter…

As we breathe that out and let that sit with our thoughts for a bit, let’s think about all the positives that this brings. I’m not going to spell them out here; that might be a little too cheesy and not personal enough for you, specifically. I’ll let you have space to think about the half-full aspects of what that means for you.

Perspective might be the cure for us all. It seems to heal my thoughts 10x faster than anything else; be it worldly or wordy. So my friends, my family, my humans sharing this experience of life with me, with the right lens we can capture and expose one beautiful concept: life doesn’t happen to us. Life just happens…
